Sexually Assaulted at School

A 14-year-old girl at Miami Carol City Senior High School was sexually assaulted by three boys at her school. The school suspended the three boys along with the girl, who said that she “couldn’t breathe” and was “chocking and crying”. The school claimed that the incident was “consensual” because the girl did not scream or run away. Later on, it was discovered that one of the boys who raped her was HIV-positive. Even though the girl is now on HIV medication, she will have to wait for a year before knowing if she has contracted the disease. Her heartbroken mom...

Beyond the Milky Way

NASA astronomers claim to have discovered unknown planets centered outside the Milky Way using a microlensing technique. The planets vary in size, and they are located in a galaxy 3.8 billion light years away from our own. “Using quasar microlensing, we were able to detect free-floating objects in the RXJ 1131-1231 lens galaxy that range from the mass of the Moon to the mass of Jupiter,” said University of Oklahoma astronomers Professor Xinyu Dai and Dr. Eduardo Guerras. “This is an example of how powerful the techniques of analysis of extragalactic microlensing can be,” the scientists claim. This discovery has...

Multimillionaire CEO Goes Missing

The boat of the multimillionaire Quicksilver boss, Pierre Agnes, washed up empty on Tuesday on a French beach.  Agnes, the CEO of Boardriders, Quicksilver’s parent company, is a former professional surfer. At 54, he had been living in Capbreton with his wife and three daughters and had headed out of a surfing resort for his usual morning fishing trip in southwest France.  Four vessels and four helicopters set out to search for him after the boat, ‘Mascaret III’, was found stranded on the beach, along the French coast north of Biarritz.  The local coastguard suspended the search operation on Tuesday night and resumed it the following...

Can Art Change the World?

Can Art Change the World?

Can art be used to change the world? There are many artists who use their art to fight for a cause they are passionate about. In France, an association called “l’atelier des artistes en exil” organized an art exhibition for refugee artists to help them display their creations in Palais-Royal, in Paris. The participating artists range from photographers and filmmakers to painters and sculptors, and even writers and comedians. One of the artists, Mohamed Hijazi, is a Syrian refugee who expresses himself through amateur films about the atrocities happening in the Syrian war. Another artist is all about empowering women. Shehzil Malik, an inspiring Pakistani artist, created a clothing line that promotes feminism. She said that her clothes are “not...

Love, A Chemical History

In The Sun is Also a Star, Nicola Yoon explains that all human beings need love in their lives. Anybody can love at any point in his/her life. But love, contrarily to what is assumed, is a complex phenomenon. It is made of 3 stages. The first stage is lust. It is controlled by testosterone and estrogen. Then comes attraction. Attraction is mostly when couples enjoy being united with...

Wretched Desperation

Akon Guode, a mother who killed three of her children back in April 2015, pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to twenty-six years and six months in prison.

Guode drove her four children into a lake in Melbourne, Australia, killing 16-month-old son Bol and four-year-old twins, Hanger and Madit. The fourth child, six-year-old Alual, survived thanks to the help of some emergency crews who pulled him out of the car moments after the tragedy occurred.

Although the father of the children testified that Guode would not have harmed them deliberately and that she had been feeling dizzy earlier that day, another witness said that Guode had been thinking about killing her kids on the same day of the calamity.

According to the judge Lex Lasry, the mother’s actions were the “product of extreme desperation.” He set a non-parole period of 20 years, and believes that Guode, who came to Australia as a refugee, will be deported after serving her sentence.
